Clint Coley Brooklyn Concert reviews
Great show - just a couple of hiccups!
Clint Coley always puts on a show that is unforgettable. Love 'em, they're always switching it up, doing surprise covers. They had an enormous screen behind them, which projected either magnified video of them on stage or trippy designs from their album. For Stellar, they even did a backlit canopy drop, which was just clever and beautiful. The lights were intense and awesome, and the acoustics were amazing - there was not a bad seat in the house. It was a great venue, I've seen them play before at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim on their tour right after A Crow Left of the Murder was released in 2004, and that was an amazing show.
At this show, however, there were a couple of things that might have helped it run more smoothly. I know that this may be in part to the design, being outside and all - and boy, the Hollywood Bowl is just HUGE! From the start, I could tell they were having a little problem with the sound. The music/vocals would get slightly louder/quieter out of nowhere. Also, the TV screens on the side, which were projecting video of them and various graphics, were kinda small for how far out we were. My friends and I were originally in section R1, which is pretty much toward the back - and we didn't get a chance to sit since someone had taken our seats and the ushers were busy. It was ok with us though - we just went down the stairs closer and stayed standing! In the future, I would definitely pay the extra bucks to get up closer, and I recommend you do the same if you're planning on seeing a show there.
Parking... Do look into that if you plan on attending the Hollywood Bowl! I wish I would have known to buy a pass online first. We had to do "stack parking," which means you pull in behind the car that just drove in - then someone pulls in behind you - etc, etc. This caused some problems since many were drunk after the show... and driving in Hollywood isn't scary enough! The downfalls were mostly just technical stuff. They played pretty much everything how they do on the albums. The only song I was disappointed in was Dig. They switched the key way lower. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not since touring does take its toll on the voice. I was pleasantly surprised that they played mostly old stuff - I even heard two songs from SCIENCE! That just made the whole night for me. And Aqueous Transmissions at the end was just beautiful. I hadn't heard them perform it live before - and I didn't know Mike could play that lute instrument (I believe it's called a Pipa)!
Overall, a great show with just a couple of hiccups. I will definitely see them again if given the chance.
